Upcoming Events
Please visit our calendar to learn about upcoming meetings, programs, workshops and other events. Our special events (auction, guest lecturers, workshops) are usually in October, November, January, February, March, and April.
Meeting: Fourth Tuesday (September through May), 10:00 a.m.
*earlier monthly date in November and December
Currently meeting at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 4250 Glebe Road, Arlington, 10-noon
Bee on the first Tuesday of the month is at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 10-noon. Masks may be required inside the church for meetings and bees.
Chapter Activities:
BEES: Our “Bees” meet on the Tuesdays when we have no meeting. The 1st Tuesday of each month we have a bee at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Arlington. All other Tuesday bees take place at members’ homes. Members will receive reminder e-mails with the address and directions to the bee each Monday morning. Bees are open to all, and are a great way for new members to become familiar with our chapter. Sew, socialize, get help with quilting questions or problems, and learn from others about new techniques.
“Service Bees”: We gather at the church several times a year to complete quilts to donate to various community organizations.
AUCTION/FUNDRAISERS:
McLEAN QU AUCTION –– Our auction is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25, from noon – 2:30 pm at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Arlington. Our donations have been pouring in so there will be many opportunities to purchase fabric, notions, quilt tops and kits and even sewing machines. All are welcome to join us for our annual live and silent auction! Bring your friends! Masks are required in the church.
CHAPTER CHALLENGE: Members may participate in each year’s chapter challenge. Past challenges have included a round robin, stash buster, and recipes as quilts.
2022-2023 Challenge: Brush Strokes: Select a painting that attracts your attention and let it inspire you. It could be the use of color, shapes, movement, anything or everything about it. It doesn’t matter if you see it in person, in a gallery or in your home, if you spot it in a book or even online. Create whatever you like. You can copy elements of it exactly or incorporate it into a more traditional quilt. Do not use a kit or try to exactly copy an existing pattern. Treat this as your craft and your art.
2021-2022 Challenge: A Day at the Beach! This past year has certainly been no day at the beach and we deserve one, therefore our challenge for this coming year is, “A Day at the Beach.” The meaning of a day at the beach is a non-stressful, relaxing day – an easy day. Therefore, let’s make this a challenge but one that is not stressful but reflects your interpretation of this phrase.
2020-2021 Challenge: Pandemic Stash Quilt, all out of stash.
2019-2020 Challenge: Caution: Curves and Circles Ahead.
2018-2019 Challenge: “Birds of a Feather”. We’ve had some sneak peeks and can’t wait to see them all at the 2020 QU show.
2017-2018 Challenge was a mystery quilt designed by Barbara Hollinger and Nancy Fallone. They were displayed in the 2019 Annual QU Show. This is Nancy’s quilt.
2016 Challenge was to take an architectural element, take a picture, and make a quilt top using that feature in the quilt.
2015 Challenge was to create a quilt with an illusion. Below, Suzie shows her entry. Many of these quilts were shown together at our Annual QU Show in June 2016.
MCLEAN CHAPTER RETREATS: Held occasionally. Usually day-long get-togethers. Work on your projects, see demonstrations of techniques, share meals, and have a blast!
HOLIDAY & END-OF-YEAR POT LUCK: A pot-luck luncheon is held twice a year; at our December McLean chapter meeting, and at our May end-of year McLean chapter meeting.
BUS TRIPS: Occasionally we take an all-day bus trip to the spring Lancaster, Pennsylvania, quilt show. See the show, take an optional side trip to an Amish quilt shop, and have dinner with us. Other chapters may sponsor trips to the Hampton Roads, Virginia, show (February) and the Philadelphia show (September); there is usually space for a few more.
“BIG QU” EVENTS
“Big QU” is Quilters Unlimited of Northern Virginia; McLean is one of its 11 chapters.
QUILT SHOW: In early June, Quilters Unlimited (“Big QU”) holds a show at the Dulles Expo & Conference Center, in Chantilly. This is a non-juried, non-judged show. Entries are open to all QU members. There are also many vendors selling quilting-related items.
SPRING AND FALL WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES: A nationally known quilter gives a lecture and workshops. Open to all QU members.
QU DIGEST
A weekly information email with quilt-related news. This operates independently of the Quilters Unlimited quilt guild. If you would like to receive this, send an email to QUDigest-owner@yahoogroups.com
